Root Canal Treatment: Saving teeth others would give up on.

When a tooth's nerve becomes infected — from deep decay, trauma, or a cracked filling — there are two options: extract the tooth, or save it with a root canal. We almost always recommend saving it. Modern root canal treatment is essentially painless and the success rate is over 95%.

The questions everyone asks

Everything you might wonder about root canal treatment.

Is a root canal painful?

The treatment itself is not painful — we use local anesthetic to numb the tooth completely. What people often describe as 'root canal pain' is actually the infection that brought them in. The treatment removes the infection. Most patients feel significantly better the moment the procedure ends.

How is it done?

We anesthetize the area, isolate the tooth, make a small opening at the top, clean out the infected pulp with fine instruments and antibacterial rinses, shape the canals, and seal them with a permanent filling material. The tooth is then sealed and, in most cases, capped with a crown to restore strength.

How many visits does it take?

Simple cases: one visit, 60–90 minutes. Complex cases or molars with multiple canals: 2 visits, with a temporary filling in between. Emergency cases that come in with severe pain can usually be made comfortable in one visit.

What's the success rate?

Over 95% for well-performed root canals. A treated tooth, with a properly fitted crown, can last decades — often a lifetime.

Is it better to just extract?

Almost never. Once a natural tooth is gone, neighbouring teeth drift, the bite changes, and the bone in that spot shrinks over time. Replacements (implants, bridges) cost significantly more than a root canal and never function quite like the original tooth. Saving the tooth, when possible, is always the better long-term choice.

What does it cost?

Root canal at Piwan Dental starts from UGX 200,000, depending on the tooth and how many canals it has (front teeth are simpler; molars cost more). If a crown is recommended afterward to protect the tooth, that is quoted separately. We always give you the full price before starting.
