From Kampala to Gulu: why patients fly north for cosmetic dentistry

7 min read · May 2026 · Piwan Dental

It started as a trickle. One patient from Kampala in 2022. Then a friend of theirs in 2023. By 2025, our calendar was showing the same pattern every month: Friday afternoon and Saturday morning bookings clustering around Kampala phone numbers — and increasingly, numbers from Kigali, Juba, even Nairobi.

"Why drive four hours when there are dentists on every corner in Kampala?" we asked.

The answers were always some version of the same things. Here's what we've learned about why dental tourism to Gulu is becoming a real movement — and what we offer that's harder to find in the capital.

Reason 1: Specialist focus on cosmetic work

Most Kampala clinics offer cosmetic dentistry as one of many services. Piwan Dental is one of the few clinics in East Africa where cosmetic dentistry is a primary specialty: tooth gems, custom grills, veneers, professional whitening, and full smile makeovers are 60% of what we do.

That focus shows in three places: our equipment (we invested in cosmetic-specific tools earlier than most), our team's continued training (The Dental Man attends international cosmetic dentistry conferences annually), and our finishing standards (a gem that's slightly off-centre is unacceptable to us — we'll redo it before you leave the chair).

Reason 2: Pricing that respects the patient

Here's an honest comparison for the same work, mid-2026:

Service Average Kampala Piwan Dental Gulu
Single tooth gemUGX 150,000–250,000From UGX 80,000
Professional whiteningUGX 400,000–700,000From UGX 250,000
Custom diamond grill (6 teeth)UGX 1,200,000+From UGX 400,000
Porcelain veneer (per tooth)UGX 800,000–1,200,000From UGX 450,000

Even with the cost of fuel or a bus ticket and a hotel night, the savings on the procedure cover the trip — and often leave change for a meal out at Acholi Inn.

Reason 3: Time, not waiting

A typical Kampala cosmetic appointment might involve a consultation visit, a "we'll call you when we can fit you in" period of 2–3 weeks, then the actual procedure. For most cosmetic work, we do consultation and procedure in the same visit.

For multi-stage work like veneers (which requires a tooth preparation visit and a fitting visit), we time both visits to a single 3-day trip — most patients arrive Friday evening, have prep done Saturday morning, recover Saturday afternoon, return for fitting Sunday morning, drive home Sunday afternoon.

How to plan the trip

Getting here

By car: 5 hours from Kampala via the Karuma–Pakwach road. By bus: GAA Bus Lines, Post Bus, or Kampala Coach all run direct to Gulu daily, 7,000–15,000 UGX one way.

Where to stay

For one-night trips, Acholi Inn or Bomah Hotel are both 10 minutes from our clinic. For longer cosmetic packages (3–5 days for veneers or implants), Gulu has Airbnb options now too.

Booking ahead

Cosmetic procedures take 1–4 hours of chair time. Don't drop in — message us on WhatsApp at +256 787 226 542 at least 48 hours before your trip and we'll confirm a specific time slot.

What about quality? Is Gulu work as good as Kampala?

The honest answer is: it's better than most Kampala work, because cosmetic dentistry is what we focus on. The same Swarovski-grade crystals. The same German-made bonding agents. The same Brazilian-imported porcelain. We use higher-end materials than most "general dentistry" clinics in any city, because cosmetic work demands it.

Our reviews — 5.0 average on Google, 8 reviews and counting — are 80% from patients who travelled in from outside Gulu. They keep the rating high because they're motivated reviewers: they made an effort to come, and they tell other people why.

The Kigali question

We get an increasing number of inquiries from Kigali, Juba, and Bujumbura. The maths is similar: a $40 bus fare and a $30 hotel night is less than the savings on a single cosmetic procedure here. The border crossings to Uganda are straightforward — Gatuna for Rwanda, Elegu for South Sudan, and Mpondwe for DRC. No special visas needed for short stays.
